Since Alappuzha is mostly known for its relaxing backwaters, houseboat cruises lie top in the list of things to do in the city. The mesmerising beauty of this little town can be enjoyed leaning back on the cosy beds or chairs inside the warm houseboats that bring food and many entertainments for a whole day. The eye-soothing sight of paddy fields and swaying coconut trees make great views. The houseboat is mostly managed by at least 3 people; a cook, a guide and an oarsman. The guide brings updated information about the various landmarks that appear in between the cruise. Traditional and delicious meals are served in every houseboat, brimming with the tempting aroma of the local Kerala cuisine.

Some of the best festivals of Kerala are celebrated with all their grandeur in Alappuzha. One such event is obviously the Nehru Trophy Boat Race which is held annually during Onam, the state's major festival. The race has been named thus, ever since India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru came to see the race. He got so moved by the cheering and enthusiasm around that he jumped into one of the boats during the race, and the same boat won the prize. Some of the boat races witness the swift and serpentine-like movements of 100-120 feet longboats, which itself is the reason why they are known as the Snake Boat Races. Other major categories of boats that participate in the races are Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthy Vallam, Odi Vallam, Veppu Vallam (Vaipu Vallam), Vadakkanody Vallam and Kochu Vallam. Chettikulangara Bharani is yet another colourful festival of the place celebrated at Chettikulangara Temple close to Mavelikara in Alappuzha. The celebration is exclusively devoted to the Goddess Bhagavathy of Hindu Mythology. The entire town of Chettikulangara is passionately involved during the celebration as they have a deep-rooted belief in the Goddess, whom they address as 'Amma' meaning mother. The man-made attractive figures that fill the processions and celebrations are known as the 'Kettukazhcha', and they are quite splendid.

The Revi Karunakaran Museum was built as a tribute to Revi Karunakara, who was a prominent figure and businessman in the coir industry of Kerala. The museum is an initiative by his wife, Mrs Betty Karunakaran, in the memory of her husband. This private-owned museum which was built in the year 2003, holds a vast collection of Swarovsky crystals in jade and ivory. It also has many porcelain sculptures, Belgian glassworks, Murano glassworks, Tanjore paintings and the like. The exhibits and artefacts displayed include the collection made by the family for three generations.

The local cuisines of Alleppey are a must-try. The famous Puttu-Kadala, Appam, Vada and many other traditional food items are served in all their authenticity. The main essence of all these preparations is fresh coconut. Seafood and other home-made dishes are the specialities of Alappuzha.

Kayaking is quite common in Kerala, particularly in Alappuzha as it is located on the Laccadive Sea. Kayaking at Alleppey brings close encounters with the local flora and fauna, if not the charming landscapes alone. Padding against the waters of small canals and passing under the pretty bridges are bound to keep the travellers close to the everyday life of the city. The motor boat-like canoe locally known as the Shikhara boat takes travellers to long distances in a very short time. There are limitless ways to explore Alappuzha in the company of waterways.

Being encircled by coastal waters, Alappuzha is a hub of vibrant bird species. Travellers are often seen making the best birding diaries here, carrying DSLRs or binoculars. There is a wide range of both endemic and migratory birds that take haven in Alleppey. Throated Kingfishers, Black Drongo and White-breasted Waterhen are some of the commonly seen birds.

Travel Advisories/Warnings

  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Alappuzha is a city on the Laccadive Sea located in the South Indian state of Kerala. The place is mostly known for its houseboat cruises that row along the enchanting backwaters of Kerala, amidst serene canals and lagoons. Besides the houseboats, several features make Alappuzha one of the top tourist places of the state. The snake boat race at Punnamada Lake is quite a delightful annual event that draws spectators from all over the state. Travellers who flock in to witness the races, mostly end up staying longer in the place, seeking enjoyment from other various treats like the Alappuzha Beach, boat cruises, food spots, and many more.

Detailed Description

Glittered by the Arabian Sea waves, Alappuzha, the 'Venice of the East' is a bouquet that Kerala welcomes its visitors with. The canals and shores lined neatly by swaying palms are one great sight of the local countryside. Alappuzha, formerly known as Alleppey, was formed as a district in 1957. In the year 1990, the place changed its name to Alappuzha. Yet, the name Alleppey is familiar to the travellers who drop by. Alleppey is remarkable for its backwater cruises, spas, hikes, food cuisines and there are limitless options to keep the mind relaxed and fresh. The place is abundantly bestowed with the quintessential facets of nature, and there is no wonder in the fact why Kerala is known as God's Own Country. Alappuzha even suits the spirituality enthusiasts, as there is a wide range of pious temples, churches and mosques that quench the thirst for spiritual well-being. Since Kerala is known for its ancient martial arts, Alappuzha offers the live demonstration of 'Kalaripayattu', as presented by martial experts. There are also opportunities to learn and master this highly defensive martial concept. Ayurvedic massages are quite common and easily available in Alappuzha. The massages are done with the use of oils extracted from rare medicinal plants as prescribed in Ayurveda. These authentic massages are bound to bring relief from anxiety, stress, and body pain. Alappuzha is undoubtedly a perfect destination for those who wish to have a relaxing vacation.
