According to the history Lord Krishna, once, appeared in the form of a sage in the court of the King who ruled the region, challenging him to win the game of chess competing with him. The King gladly accepted the invitation and asked the sage to chose the prize. The sage wished for a few grains of rice. The grains were placed in the squares in the chessboard, each. Every square will have double of its prior. The King lost as he started adding the grains to the board, and realized that the demand was not as humble as he thought it would be. In the end, the number had reached one million. The Royal Granary ran out of rice. The prize reached trillions of tons of rice. Later the sage revealed his true form and told the King that he did not have to pay the debt immediately but over time by serving Paalpayasam freely to the pilgrims until the debt was paid off. The architecture and construction of the temple is beautifully designed in Kerala style. A beautiful painting of ten avatars of Lord Vishnu is the main attraction in the temple premises for devotees. Above all, Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple is famous for its Ottanthullal that is performed once in a year. Chambakulam Moolam Festival is a major festival of this shrine which is celebrated on the Moolam Day every year. A number of pilgrims and tourists flock this place and take blessings from Lord Krishna. The Aaraattu festival is also celebrated here which starts in the months of March and April. Another festival like Pallipana is also celebrated here once in every 12 years.

The main god leading the temple is Lord Krishna. Another name for Lord Krisha is Parthasarathi. The idol is carved out of black granite stone and carries the sacred conch (shankh) in the left hand and a whip in the right. The Payasam served here is extremely admired and popular among devotees, which is a sweet pudding which made of rice and milk.

Travel Advisories/Warnings
  • UK Safety Warnings
  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna temple is placed in Ambalapuzha, Alapuzha district in the state of Kerala, India. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna. This temple is built in the typical Kerala architectural style. The temple houses the beautiful idol of Lord Krishna. The temple is famous all over India for its daily offering of deliciously sweet milk porridge which is known as the Pal Payasam. The temple also has a grand display of paintings portraying the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu (Dasavatharam).

Detailed Description

The Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple is believed to have been founded in the 15th-17th century AD. It was founded by local ruler Devanarayanan Tampuran. The temple is recorded for the performance of Pallipana performed every 12 years by Velans (sorcerers). Devotees are also reminded that the first performance of the Ottanthullal was performed here. It is a strong satirical folk art that comments on various socio-political issues. The temple is associated with the origin of the famous Kerala performing art form, Ottamthullal. It is believed that the legendary Malayalam poet Kalakkaththu Kunchan Nambiar developed this unique art form in the premises of the Ambalappuzha Temple. This magnificent pilgrimage centre has a large number of devotees who frequently visit all year round.
