Palani is religiously significant as the revival spot of Lord Murugan. History has it that the Palani Murugan Temple was re-sanctified by the Chera Dynasty. The belief was that Palani, blessed by Lord Murugan, protected the Chera Kingdom whose eastern region was unguarded. The temple's sanctum depicts the architecture of the Cheras. It is said that the idol of Lord Murugan is made from the blend of nine poisonous substances. They form an immortal medicine when combined in a fixed ratio. The idol is placed on a stone-foundation framed with an archway. The idol represents Lord Subrahmanya in the form of an ascetic which he had assumed at Palani. It is the form of a young recluse with the shaven head, wearing only a loincloth and armed with the dhandam. Panguni Uthiram is an important festival celebrated for ten days in the temple. Kavadies with holy waters collected from sacred rivers, tender coconut and sugar are carried by the devotees. The significant part of the festival is the rural music. The temple hosts during the ten days, rural songs along with rural dances like Samiyattam, Velanattam, Dhidumattam, Thappattam, Oyilattam, etc.“Theertham or posts of sacred water taken from Kodumudi is offered during Panguni Uthiram. This holy water is used to give abhishekam for Lord Palani Andavar. The devotees who parade to Palani carrying Kavadis sing Kavadi songs through the entire padayatra. Kavadi songs are old oral songs. The first day of Panguni Uthiram is marked by a flag-hoisting at Tiruvavinankugi Temple. There is a procession of Lord Muthukumara Swamy with Sri Deivanai and Sree Valli around the Palani Hill on all the ten days. The seventh day hosts a car festival which is attended by a large number of devotees. During the ten days of Panguni Uthiram, Lord Muruga is given special pooja and reception in the mandapams of Palani Adivaram region. The sight of the deity during the procession is majestic.

Lord Murugan is the popular God of Tamil Nadu. Palani temple, known as Tiru Avinankudi is the third Padai Veedu. A major custom of the temple is the tonsuring of devotees. They shave their heads resembling the deity of Palani. The anointing of the idol's head with sandalwood paste is another tradition of the temple. It is usually done at night before the temple is closed. It is believed that the paste which stays overnight on the idol's head acquires medicinal values. The paste is then distributed to the devotees as Rakkala Chandanam.

Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Palani Arulmigu Shri Dhandayuthapani temple is situated in Palani Town of the district of Dindigul. The temple is hailed as one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan. It is located in the foothills of Palani Hills in Tamil Nadu. The temple is about 100 kilometres to the south-east of Coimbatore and north-west of Madurai. The temple rests on Sivagiru, one of the two higher hills of Palani. The devotees can reach uphill using steps, winch and rope car service or using the sliding elephant way.

Detailed Description

The temple gets its name from the combination of words, pazham which means fruit and Ni meaning you. The temple is devoted to Lord Murugan or Kartikeya who is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is believed that Lord Murugan resided in this place after leaving Mount Kailash to become a hermit. The chief festivals of the temple are Panguni Uthiram and Thai Poosam. The temple complex houses several sub-temples connected to the main temple. A large number of devotees visit the temple for Lord Murugan's darshan. The temple, dating back to the 9th century, was built by Cheraman Peruman, the Cheran king. One has to climb approximately 659 steps in order to get to the temple at the hilltop.
