The historical remnants of Chitharal Jain Monuments are the evidence of the Jain settlements which existed in the Chitharal Village of Kanyakumari. The place was formerly known as Thirucharanathupalli which was the haven of many Digambar Jain Monks. The Pallava king, Mahendravarman I, was a votary (a person who has made vows of dedication to religious service) of Jainism. He propagated Jainism in this region of the state. The king is accredited with several constructions, especially the rock-cut carvings of the cave temples.

Chitharal Jain Monuments is known for the Rock-cut temple. The cave temple contains rock-cut sculptures of Thirthankaras and attendant deities. These sculptures are carved inside and outside and date back to 9th Century A.D. This temple was converted into Bhagavathy Temple in the 13th Century A.D. Visitors need to walk for about 10 minutes to reach the temple.

There is a cave temple at the top of the hill with a mandapa, a verandah corridor and a balipeetham with a kitchen (madappalli) built into a natural overhanging rock facing the west. It has three sanctums which house the Tirthankara (possibly Mahavira) in the middle, a goddess on the right and Parshwanatha on the left. The central shrine's gopuram was damaged due to lightning.

Travel Advisories/Warnings

  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Chitharal Cave Temple, also known as Chitharal Malai Kovil, is located on the hillock named Thiruchanattu Malai near the village of Chitharal in the Kanyakumari district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The hills are known among the natives as Chokkanthoongi Hills. The cave, located on top of a mound in the village, is quite famous for its rock-cut images of Jain Tirthankaras and attendant deities. These cave sculptures dating back to the 9th century are of high archaeological importance.

Detailed Description

The Chitharal Jain Monuments are situated atop a hillock in the village of Chitharal in Kanyakumari. The monuments are assumed to be the ruins of an ancient Jain centre dating back to the 9th century. A 2-kilometre trek takes the travellers to the ruins of the monuments above the hill. The trek is quite challenging and difficult, and the trekkers are aided by proper tracks and protective barriers. There are two big rocks facing each other and forms a kind of window through which one can view the running rivers, lakes, tall church spires, coconut fields and village clusters below the hill. The temples and monuments represent the diverse culture and religious harmony in India.
