Activities

Kozhikode City is renowned as a place of charm and unparalleled natural beauty. The beach has gained prominence over a century and it was the centre of the city besides Valiyangadi. Most of the foreign traders including the Arabs and Europeans flocked into Valiyangadi after which the prominence was taken over by Mananchira and then Mavoor Road during the 1980s. Currently, the centre of the city happens to be Palazhi on the airport road and even the Thondayad Bypass Area. Nightlife vibrantly exists in these places where most of the people enjoy hanging out. The Kozhikode Beach bears significance in the pages of history as a major trading port that represented the city. The old piers have stood the test of time covering centuries and strongly existing even today in their truest form. Vasco Da Gama landed first on this port, after which the famous spice route came into being.

Kozhikode Beach is synonymous for lip-smacking seafood delicacies and snacks. The beach is studded with numerous hotels, accommodations, shacks and spas to treat every traveller that comes seeking the place. One of the best delicacies served here is the mussels which locally known as Kallumekaya.

Scuba divers are mostly spotted diving into the Arabian Sea to experience the entrancing beauty of marine life. Calicut Beach offers huge scope for underwater adventure activities. Visitors join to encounter the numerous species of underwater flora and fauna that take home in the Arabian Sea. Kozhikode also promotes snorkelling and it has started receiving popularity in the place. Snorkelling lets the visitors enjoy the underwater sights in absolute comfort for a longer duration.

Travel Advisories/Warnings
  • UK Safety Warnings
  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Kozhikode Beach, otherwise known as Calicut Beach lies at the western side of Calicut city located on the Malabar Coast in India. Kozhikode Beach is the prime attraction in the city and delivers the best sunsets featuring the gorgeous Arabian Sea. The port is an old one that bears an old lighthouse with two crumbling piers that lead themselves into the sea. Various natural elements together accentuate the beauty of Kozhikode and keep its charm unchanged.

Detailed Description

Kozhikode Beach is known for its amber sunsets that rejuvenate each of its visitors. Mahatma Gandhi visited Calicut in the year 1934 after which the beach road received its name 'Gandhi Road'. Most of the significant public meetings are held here. The city has Beypore to its south and Kappad to its north from where long drives can be taken to reach Calicut. Calicut Beach has many parts of it as the beaches of Beypore, Payyanakkal, Marad, Kallayi, Kuttichira, Thekkeppuram, Vellayil, South Beach, Valiyangadi, Kamburam, Putiyappa and Elathur. Beach Road is the general name given to the entire land that stretches parallel to the Calicut Beach. Kozhikode Beach can be accessed by four main roads of the city. Some of the attractions on the beach include the Lion's Park and an aquarium which draw kids towards. The two piers owned by the beach are dates back to centuries and are excellent subjects of photography. The evenings ate Kozhikode Beach are truly enchanting with the large tides amidst the amber skies. The early morning hours witness the playful dolphins that bounce every now and then. Kozhikode Beach suits food lovers and photography enthusiasts
