The history of Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple is closely associated with Lord Parasurama who is believed to be the creator of Kerala. Lord Nagaraja, being pleased with Parasurama's penance, appeared before him to bless him with a desalinated land and also granted his eternal presence in Kerala. Thus, Nagaraja decided to reside at that place and bless its residents as per the wish of Parasurama. Legend says that a Brahmin couple named Vasudeva and Sreedevi who were childless, resolutely worshipped for a child. Sreedevi became pregnant and gave birth to a five-headed serpent child and also a human child. Nagaraja, who realized that the objectives of his incarnation had been done, informed his mother that he would live at this home forever at the cellar. Devotees believe that the five-headed Nagaraja still stays in the cellar of the house, meditating for the prosperity of his descendants. Nagaraja gave certain instructions that only mother herself can offer worship to him and men are allowed only on certain days, before leaving for the cellar and he also instructed that after the mother's time, the senior-most Brahmin lady in the family would have the status of the Mother. This is the main reason why the rituals of the Mannarasala Temple are carried out by a woman. As a serpent temple, Mannarasala Ayilyam is the main Temple festival. Thulam's Ayilyam in the Calendar of Malayalam is popularly known as the Mannarasala Ayilyam. It is celebrated with much religious enthusiasm on the Ayilyam asterism in the Malayalam month of Thulam which roughly corresponds to the months of October and November. The main attraction of this festival is the grand procession in which all the serpent idols in the holy woods and the Mannarasala Temple are taken to the Illam (the Brahmin ancestral home) where special prayers and offerings like Nurum Palum (rice flour and milk) are performed. Mannarasala Amma, the chief priestess carries the golden idol of the main deity to the Illam.

It is believed that Nagaraja, as the primary deity, is endowed with the form of Hari (Lord Vishnu) and the spirit of Lord Shiva. Many devotees from different regions visit this temple to offer prayers to the deity. Through the light of experience, many devotees here who have witnessed and learned about the serpents' divine powers and the presiding deities tell a lot of stories about the Mannarasala temple. In this temple puja pattern is headed by a Brahmin lady. Valia Amma is the heart and soul of Mannarasala. Many women visit the temple to seek blessings of the Nagaraja for children. Women blessed with babies usually return to the temple to give gratitude.

Travel Advisories/Warnings

  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple is a famous serpent temple in Kerala's Alappuzha district, near Harippad. This well-known temple is under the support of a Brahmin family. Unlike other temples in the state, this shrine is headed by a priestess. This nationally famous temple is dedicated to the serpent god Nagaraja. It is believed that the deity in this pilgrim centre is blessed with the spirit of Lord Shiva and has the form of Lord Vishnu. Many devotees from different regions visit this temple to offer prayers to the deity.

Detailed Description

Mannarasala Nagaraja temple is a holy place where many special rituals and concepts are performed. The temple is in the middle of a forest area and many idols of snakes can be seen in the temple premises. It is believed that the turmeric distributed in the temple has wonderful healing powers and even effective to treat skin problems. Mannarasala temple is more awe-inspiring and unbelievable, as envision and blessed by Lord Parasurama, the creator of God own country, Kerala. The temple has over 30,000 images of snakes in various shapes and sizes along the path and among the trees, and it is one amongst the largest such temples in Kerala. It is not a rare thing to see the same serpent appear in the same location for several days in the temple premises. Mannarasala temple belief systems and rituals are distinct from most other temples. One of the most famous devotee offerings in Mannarasala is Uruli Kamazhthu in Nilavara.
