The Mishkal Masjid is an impressive wooden monument noted for its architectural grandeur. It is a four-storeyed ancient monument built by a wealthy Arab merchant and ship owner named Nakhooda Mishkal, after whom the temple is named. This massive structure is noted for the extensive use of timber. The structure of the mosque consists of a capacious prayer hall which can hold numerous people, several doors and sculpted pillars which support the whole structure, and the Italian-tiled exterior paving. The masjid does not have minarets and copulas which are typical of mosques. The intricate sculpting on the ceilings and walls, and the gopuram-styled entrance arches of the mosque resemble the traditional temple architecture. The mosque has rectangular and square tanks attached to it and are situated near the popular Kuttichira pond. The interior of the mosque in ventilated perfectly and has mihrab-style doors. An intricately carved wooden mimbar was added to the mosque while it got renovated. The mosque was originally five-storeyed which was downsized to four-storeys after the attack of the Portuguese. The mosque holds the evidence of the devastation caused by the attack. The Mishkal Masjid stands as an exemplary structure representing communal harmony as the wood for refurbishing the mosque was contributed by the Zamorin, the Hindu ruler of Calicut.

The Mishkal Masjid is a historically significant monument noted for its ancient architectural grandeur. It is indicative of the glorious past. It is a 700- year old iconic structure erected by Nakhooda Mishkal in the 14th century. The mosque gets its name from this Arab merchant. The four-storeyed mosque was a five-storeyed structure before it was attacked by the Portuguese. The temple was renovated with the help of a Hindu ruler, the Zamorin. This suggests the reason behind the resemblance of the mosque's architecture to that of a temple rather than to Arab cupolas. The mosque is indicative of the religious harmony in the region. Mishkal Mosque is the symbol of communal harmony of Calicut.

Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Mishkal Mosque is an antique mosque situated in Calicut in the state of Kerala. It is situated in Kuttichira in the region of Thekkeppuram in Calicut. Being one of the oldest mosques in Malabar, Mushkil Mosque is a significant historical, cultural and architectural monument. It was erected by Nakhooda Mishkal, an affluent Arab Merchant, in the 14th century. The mosque owes its name to him. The architectural grandeur of the mosque can be reflected from its four-storeyed structure which is supported on wooden pillars.

Detailed Description

The Mishkal Masjid is the oldest mosque in Calicut and is located at Kuttichira. The mosque gets its name from the wealthy Arab merchant, Nakhuda Mishkal who erected the structure in the 14th century. The four-storeyed mosque standing on wooden pillars reflects the architectural style of Kerala. The architectural attractions of the mosque include the black-and-white chequered flooring, the traditional tiled roof and the blue and teal paint. It consists of several doors, sculpted pillars and a large prayer hall which can accommodate a good number of people. The mosque has a large tank adjoining it. The entire walls of the mosque are wooden except for the walls of the ground floor. History has it that the mosque was burnt by the Portuguese Naval Force to create a rift between the Muslim and Hindu communities. The top floor of the mosque contains some of its remains. However, the burnt mosque was renovated and protected by the local Hindu ruler or the Zamorin. The unique feature of the mosque is that it welcomes people irrespective of their religion and faith.
