Pilgrims to Sabarimala observe several forms of worship, which include Shaivite, Vaishnav and Shaktist customs. Though the pilgrimage is undertaken mainly by Hindus, everyone is welcome to undertake the pilgrimage irrespective of caste, creed, religion or colour. Pilgrims chant ‘Swamiye Sharanam Ayyappa' when they visit the temple and are easily identifiable by their black or blue dress. They also do not shave until after their return from the pilgrimage and anoint their forehead with Vibhuti or sandal paste. The pilgrims greet each other as ‘Swami' and strict penance, fasting for 40 days and celibacy are observed by pilgrims. Stopping the use of tobacco and meat is also mandatory and complete abstinence from worldly affairs should be observed during this period. Rudraksha Mala (necklace) is also worn as a form of reverence and to indicate their status as pilgrims. The entry of women in the 10-50 age group is strictly prohibited but the matter is debatable and currently under consideration by the judiciary of India. The 18 sacred steps (Pathinettu thripadikal) leading to the temple can be ascended only by those carrying "Irumudikkettu and there is a separate stairway for those not carrying "Irumudikkettu”. Before ascending to the temple of Lord Ayyppa, one should pay obeisance to Vavur Swami and Kadutha Swami at the foot of the steps and should also take a dip in the sacred river Pamba, which is said to wash away one's sins.

The worship of Sastha, a Hindu deity, is an essential part of the ancient history of South India. There are thus a number of Sastha temples located in South India and also across the world. As per history, the temple at Sabarimala is one of the five Sastha temples that were founded by Lord Parasurama, with the other four being located at Kulathupuzha, Aryankavu, Achankovil and Poonambala Medu. At Sabarimala, the Sastha Lord is worshipped as Ayyappan or Dharmasasta. It is believed that the prince of the Pandalam dynasty, who was an avatar of Lord Ayyappan, meditated at the Sabarimala temple and ultimately became one with the Divine. The place where he meditated is now known as the Manimandapam. Even after the temple was installed, it was mostly unreachable for the religious devotees for about three hundred years. It was only in the 12th century when the Tamil king, Rajasekhara Pandiyan, rediscovered the original path to reach the sacred spot that the temple was renovated and became a famous pilgrimage site. This ancient temple is nestled in the midst of 18 hills at an altitude of 4133 feet above sea level and is surrounded by mountains and dense forests. The beautiful dome of the shrine is covered with gold and the Sannidhanam (main temple) is built on a 40-foot high plateau. The shrine was rebuilt in 1950 after a fire gutted the premises and in the process, the stone image of the deity was replaced by a Panchaloha idol made from an alloy of five metals. The Sanctum Sanctorum is topped by a copper-plated roof and the flagstaff was installed in 1969. There is a shrine dedicated to Sri Ganapathi within the premises and devotees break coconuts in front of the shrine as a mark of respect to the deity. A shrine of the Snake God is also located adjacent to the main temple and devotees offer prayers here as well. The Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala observes an annual festival celebrated from the month of November to mid-January. Mandal Puja and Makar Sankranti Puja are the two main occasions when the temple is visited by the maximum number of people. Worship is offered at the shrine during the Mandal Puja period which starts on November 15th and ends on 26th December, then again on 14th January during Makaravilakku or "Makara Sankranti" and on 14th April during Maha Vishuva Sankranti. The Makara Vilakku is truly a sight to behold from the Sabarimala hills when one gets to view the ‘Holy Light', which is said to indicate the presence of a divine entity.

Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Sabarimala Temple
Destination Description

Sabarimala is situated 72 kilometres from Pathanamthitta town of Kerala and is a famous pilgrim centre in India. It is situated on the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats at an altitude of 914 metres above sea level and is accessible only by foot through a climb of 4 kilometres from Pamba. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Sree Ayyappa and the main temple stands beautifully on a 40 feet high plateau that comprises of a sanctum sanctorum with a copper-plated roof, four golden finials, two mandapams and a flagstaff. The main staircase to the Sabarimala Temple is made up of 18 sacred steps, with the temples of Karuppu Sami and Kadutha Swami, two of Lord Ayyappan's trusted lieutenants, positioned at the foot as guards.

Detailed Description

The Sabarimala Temple is a revered and popular Hindu religious centre located in the midst of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The shrine witnesses a very large annual pilgrimage of over 100 million devotees visiting every year. Mandala pooja and Makaravilakku are the two main events of the pilgrim season. The Sabarimala temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, who is considered a united form of the two celestial deities Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva and hence this temple propagates the essence of both Shaivism and Vaishnavism. Some regard Lord Ayyappa as a form of Lord Buddha as Dharma Shasta, but there is no sufficient evidence to back up this theory. The complex also houses the Pampa Ganapathi temple, Nilakal Mahadeva temple and Palliyara Bhagavathi temple. The temple of Malikappurath Amma, who is considered to be as important as Lord Ayyappa himself, is also located nearby. Several temples exist in the hills surrounding Sabarimala, with some of them still functional and many just being remnants of old temples that have survived.
