The Temple of Thirunelli is an ancient temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The peaceful surroundings help to refresh one 's mind and calm it down. Rituals concerning this temple are performed on banks of the stream, Papanashini. The stream is believed to have medicinal powers and thus pilgrims often take a holy dip there. The pilgrims visit Thirunelli Temple to offer prayers and to perform the ancestral rites called Bali. In Kerala, this temple is known to have the biggest number of 'Bali tharpana' performed in a day. Towards the western side of the temple, there is a cave dedicated to Lord Shiva. Hence, it is believed that the temple has received the blessing of the Tridev-Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

The name Thirunelli derives from the word Nelli, it is equivalent to the Indian gooseberry (Amla) tree in Malayalam / Tamil. It is believed that once when Lord Brahma was crossing the world, he saw an idol of Lord Vishnu resting in the valley on an amla tree, and thus the place came to be named Thirunelli. Festivals: The most important festival falls on the day of Vishu (on Malayalam Era's first Medam month). Devotees offer gifts (Kani) on this day to Lord. Vishu means equinox, that is to say, the day in which night and day are of the same duration. It is the season of Konna Trees (Golden Shower Tree -- Casia Fistula) flowers and makes a charming flower show feeding our eyes and the mind that make a very beautiful sight in and around Thirunelli. Devotees from far come to enjoy this sight and have a darshan of the Lord Mahavishnu.

Travel Advisories/Warnings
  • UK Safety Warnings
  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Thirunelli is a beautiful and famous village in the Wayanadu district of Kerala State in India. Thirunelly Temple is an ancient temple in a beautiful valley below the range of Brahmagiri hills near the border of Kerala-Karnataka. It is one of Kerala's most ancient pilgrimage sites, and also one of Wayanad's most famous temples. The temple is devoted to Lord Maha Vishnu Thirunelli Temple is the only temple in the world where devotees can perform all the life-related rituals from birth to death and after death. Surrounding the temple there are huge mountains and beautiful forests.

Detailed Description

Thirunelli Temple is also known as Amalaka temple and Sidha temple. This is one of the oldest temples in Kerala. The Temple of Thirunelli draws pilgrims from all over, mainly for the ancestral rites. The rituals take place on the banks of the Papanasini stream which flows down from Mount Brahmagiri. The stream is believed to have divine power to undo the sins of all mortals. Another significant temple attraction is the holy rock where people pray for their forefathers. The beautiful Brahmagiri hills and the dense green forests surrounding them have turned the temple premises into a peaceful valley. So everybody feels relaxed after sitting in the sanctum of the temple. The temple is a representation of the architecture of ancient temples. The temple also has a pond, at the centre of which is a stone slab with the impression of Lord Vishnu 's feet called Panchatheertham.
