The Thunchan Memorial is a reality set in Tirur's Vettathu Nadu, where the great linguist Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan was born. The Kanjiram flower, the lake's east side, the scatting and the etymology, the sculpture's relics are Thunchan's ritual imprints. The idea to restore the Thunchan Parambu, which had fallen into disrepair, was erected after the author's death. In 1954 K. P. Kesava Menon convoked a meeting for the memorial site construction. 4 acres and 60 cents of land were purchased with government funds and donations from people. Pattom Thanu Pillai, Kerala's then-Chief Minister, laid the stone for the memorial in 1961. Thunchan Parambu at Tirur found a place in the cultural history of Kerala with the memorial opened on 15 January 1964. The first Thunchan Memorial Management Committee was formed with Keshava Menon as the Secretary and Punnakkal Kutti Sankaran Nair as Secretary. The same committee continued to conduct the development work at Thunchan Parambu until the 1970s. Notable persons such as S.K Pottekatt, T.N Jayachandran, M. S. Menon served as chairman of the Memorial after K. P. Kesava Menon. M.T. Vasudevan Nair took over as President in 1993. A research centre, which opened in 1998, has been recognized as an accredited research centre by the University of Calicut. Programs including regional conferences, a South Indian poetry festival, friendly literary meetings from various states, book fairs, exhibits, variety entertainment, etc are held annually during Thunchan Festival in the first week of February. The Literary Museum traces the history of Malayalam language and literature through various media including visual clippings, sound recordings, drawings, and photographs. The museum includes articles and information relating to many famous writers of the past.

Travel Advisories/Warnings
  • UK Safety Warnings
  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.

Destination Description

Thunchan parambu is the birthplace of Thunchaththu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan who is considered to be the Father of the Malayalam language. It is in Tirur, a small town located 32 km from Malappuram in Kerala. For posterity, Thunchan Parambu has been preserved with items such as the iron stylus used by the scholar and the literary giant being kept on display. There is also a Kanjira tree under which Ezhuthachan Thunchath imparted knowledge to his beloved disciples and composed his poems. A granite Saraswathi Mandapam is also situated in the memorial along with rare manuscripts.

Detailed Description

In 1964 Thunchan Smarakam (Memorial) was built in Thunchan Parambu in the memory of Thunchathu Ezhuthachan. The Memorial upholds ideals of Thunchathu Ezhuthachan. He is believed to have been born in Thunjan village and died in Chittoor. Despite disputes over his real name, caste and religion, there's no denying that he was the one who laid the foundations for the language of Malayalam. One of the most visited attractions in here is the stunning bronze statue of a parrot. It is believed that this parrot was the one who recited poetry to the author. Ezhuthachan updated the Malayalam alphabets in Thunjan Parambu and wrote the Harinamakeerthanam to popularize them. In Prathamalayalam Ezhuthachan wrote the Ramayana and the Mahabharata in a manner as expressed by a bird. The entire Ramayana in Malayalam was recited by a parrot to the poet so that he could write tirelessly without stopping in between. Children are brought here on Vijayadashami day to be introduced into the world of knowledge and education and are formally introduced to learn and write their initial letters on grains of sand and rice here.
