Udaipur offers a remarkable heritage walk to explore the streets, palaces and lakes, and to enjoy the views of the traditional city. The heritage walk takes the travellers to the sights of working goldsmiths, temple ceremonies and the old-fashioned shops selling almost anything from shoes to books. Vintage Walking Tours provide the dawn and dusk tours. The travellers can avail the Udaipur Heritage Walk organised by Virast Experiences to engage with the local craftsmen who make a bamboo craft, jewellery and pottery. Some of the prominent attractions of Udaipur include Monsoon Palace, Haldighati, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park, Gulab Bagh Zoo and other parks and museums.

The Ahar Museum of Udaipur is of high merit. It is a remarkable network of cenotaphs of Mewar kingdom's Maharanas. It houses archaeological materials and sculptures which date back to 1700 BC and also a unique collection of earthenware. A 10th-century metallic Buddha is the prime attraction of the museum. Another important site of Udaipur is Bagore Ki Haveli, situated close to Lake Pichola, at Gangaur Ghat. It was built by Amar Chand Badwa in the 18th century. The palace is quite huge with its classical Haveli-style interiors made of mirror and glass. There are about a hundred rooms in the palace exhibiting modern art and costumes. The palace also hosts a cultural programme in the evenings. Rajasthani Puppetry is one of the most culturally significant spectacles in the country. Puppetry shows many vibrant wooden dolls handled by the puppeteers with the aid of strings attached to the dolls. There is a puppetry workshop which offers an interesting time for family and kids. These puppets are made in three stages which include carving puppet faces out of a wooden block, painting the arms and face of the puppet and designing costumes by cutting coloured fabrics. The workshop provides the entire materials required as well as transportation facilities for the visitors. At the end of the workshop, the participants can take home the puppets they made.

Boating is an interesting activity in the Lake Pichola of Udaipur. Boat rides around the time of sunset are a major attraction. There is an island in Lake Pichola which has Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir. The travellers can also opt for English-speaking tour guides for private boat riding.

Udaipur's food culture is quite enticing with its vegetarian cuisine called Thali. It includes vegetables, chutneys, curries, rice and several other items rich in fragrant spices. These dishes are served in small bowls kept on a round plate. Ghee served additionally gives a unique taste to the dishes. There are about 10 to 15 varieties of food in Rajasthani Thali. There are cooking sessions to understand the essence of Thali which is a mix of ghee, sweets and spices. Halwa is another savoury of the cuisine. The session prepares the wards to chop vegetables required for making dishes like Bhindi curry, Pulao, Chapati and Matar Paneer. This authentic food style allures a good number of food lovers.

Horseback Riding is one of the top activities in Udaipur. The visitors are offered with safaris as well as routes for horse riding. Some of the horse-riding trails pass through the mountain ranges of Aravalli. Horse riding provides an opportunity to explore the villages, rural areas and the picturesqueness of the city.

  • US Safety Warnings
Safety and security
Crime

Take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your property against petty crime. Don’t leave passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, as there have been a high number of thefts by gangs targeting the vehicles of those who appear to be tourists. Violent crime, including gun crime, rarely involves tourists, but you should take care when travelling in unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking through less travelled areas alone, especially at night. You can find public advisories and information about recent incidents on the websites of local law enforcement authorities. Incidents of mass shooting can occur, but account for a very small percentage of homicide deaths. Read the US Department of Homeland Security website, which has published advice on what to do in such an incident. Research your destination before travelling, be vigilant, and follow the advice of local authorities. Crime associated with the illegal drugs trade is a major issue in Mexican states bordering Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Some foreign nationals have been among the victims of crime in the border regions, but there is no evidence to suggest they have been targeted because of their nationality.

Road travel

Traffic laws vary from state to state. If you’re planning to drive in the USA, check the driving rules in the state(s) you’ll be visiting. In most states, a full UK driving licence is sufficient (provisional licences aren’t accepted). However, some states may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which you can get over the counter at the Post Office. The USA doesn’t issue IDPs to foreign visitors, so you’ll need to get one before you travel. If you’re hiring a vehicle, check requirements with your rental company before you travel. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. Check the weather conditions before embarking on a long journey, particularly in mountainous and isolated areas where there is increased likelihood of snowfall, or in dry desert areas where you may need extra water and petrol stations could be scarce. Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas and avoid leaving any items on display in your car. Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks. If you’re involving in a collision while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for the police. Petrol stations that do not display the price of fuel usually charge considerably more than the national average for a gallon of fuel. They’re often found close to tourist destinations and airports, and notoriously near to Orlando International Airport. In 2019 there were 36,120 road deaths in the USA (source: Department for Transport). This equates to 11 road deaths per 100,000 of population and compares to the UK average of 2.7 road deaths per 100,000 of population in 2019.

Air travel

Before you travel, check the security measures you’re likely to face at the airport on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website. The TSA has a helpline number to help passengers with disabilities and medical conditions before they fly. Don’t make flippant remarks about bombs or terrorism, especially when passing through US airports. Safety concerns have been raised about INSEL Air. The UK Government, like other governments (including the USA and The Netherlands), prohibits its staff from using the airline while safety checks are being carried out.
